Water Gardens
Most water gardens are home to Koi or goldfish. Few things are as mesmerizing as sitting quietly alongside a pond and watching the fish swim around gracefully.
Whether formal or natural materials are used, protection from elements and predators needs to be considered in the design. Caves, tunnels and a varied depth from of 0 - 3 feet can provide for visual interest and aid in protection for our little friends. Don't forget the aquatic plants! Shade or sun, you can add some color and interest to your project.
Fertilizer runoff and leaf debris can affect the health of your garden, so make sure you don't locate it at the lowest point on your property. Drainage should also be designed to divert runoff away from your water garden.
Please be prepared, as this is not a maintenance-free feature. Whenever you are dealing with living creatures, whether plants or animals, some care and oversight are required to ensure their health and vitality. If you don't mind a little effort, water gardens can add tremendous joy and tranquility to your life. You'll also love the Koi eating out of your hands!
